During the Second World War he won the Navy Cross, the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. Determined to take part in the fighting he hitchhiked to the front but soon afterwards he was blown up by a mortar round and was left for dead for over four hours. He was hospitalized after being wounded in the knee while fighting at Guadalcanal. His father was a soldier who had been decorated for bravery during the First World War.Īfter the attack on Pearl Harbor Manchester joined the United States Marines.
